Google Is Changing How AI Mode Explains Its Own Links
Google is adding more links inside AI Mode, plus short notes on why each one matters. Here's what that means if you want to get cited.
Google is showing more links inside AI Mode answers, and now adds a short note next to each one explaining why it might be worth clicking. This means getting linked to is no longer the whole story. How your link gets explained matters too, and Google writes that explanation itself, based on your page.
- Google is showing more inline links inside AI Mode answers than before.
- Each link can now come with a short note explaining why it's worth clicking, written by Google.
- The visual design of these links inside AI Mode is also changing.
- Search Live (voice and camera search) is expanding to 200+ countries where AI Mode exists.
- You can't write your own link description, but you can make your page give Google better material to work with.
What is Google changing about AI Mode links?
Three things, all at once:
| Change | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| More links per answer | More chances to be one of the links shown |
| Short "why click this" notes | Your link now comes with context, written by Google |
| New visual design | Links look and feel different inside the answer |
Why does "more links" not always mean more traffic?
Because being linked and being linked well are different things. A link buried in a plain list at the bottom of an answer gets treated very differently by a reader than a link with a clear, specific reason to click it. Both technically count as "getting cited." Only one of them is likely to actually get clicked.
How do you get a good link description?
You can't write it yourself. Google generates that short note automatically, based on what it pulls from your page. But it's not random either:
- A page that states things clearly gives Google specific material to build a good description from.
- A page full of vague, hedged language gives Google nothing solid to work with, so you'll likely get a generic note, or none at all.
The link was never the whole story. What Google writes around it is now something it actively designs, not an accident.
This connects directly to two things a full AEO & GEO audit already checks: whether your page answers clearly (Answerability) and whether your claims are backed by something checkable (Attribution & Trust). That's exactly the kind of content Google needs to write a specific, useful link description.
What is Search Live, and why does it matter?
Search Live is Google's voice and camera version of AI Mode. It's now expanding to over 200 countries wherever AI Mode already works. This matters for a simple reason: voice and camera questions tend to be longer and more conversational than typed ones. That's one more reason to write content around the real question someone would ask out loud, not a short keyword phrase. Our checklist covers this exact idea in more detail.
What should you check on your own site?
You can't control whether Google writes you a good link description directly. You can control the input it works from:
- State your key facts plainly, near the top of the page, not buried in the middle.
- Name your sources. "Studies show" gives Google nothing to quote. A named, linked source does.
- Check your crawlability. None of this matters if AI crawlers can't read your page in the first place. A free LLM Access Check shows you that in seconds.
Is this rolled out everywhere yet?
Not confirmed globally. The link changes have been reported through US coverage so far. Search Live's 200+ country expansion is the one piece of this update with a clearer, wider rollout confirmed.
FAQ
Can I write my own description for how Google links to my page?
No. Google writes that short note itself, based on what it pulls from your page. You can only influence it indirectly, by making your content specific and clearly sourced.
Does more inline links mean more traffic for my site?
Not necessarily. More links with better descriptions could mean more clicks, or readers might get enough from the description alone to click less. This is too new to have a clear answer yet.
Is this update live in my country?
The link and description changes have mostly been reported in the US so far. Search Live's expansion to 200+ countries is the part of this update with confirmed wide availability.
What is Search Live?
Google's voice and camera-based version of AI Mode, letting you search by talking or pointing your camera instead of typing.
How is this different from a normal search result snippet?
A normal snippet is a short preview Google pulls automatically. This new note is written specifically to explain why a link matters inside an AI-generated answer, not just to preview the page.
